January engine production falls -15.9% as pandemic pressures continue

  • UK engine production declines -15.9% on January last year, to 141,472 units.
  • Production for domestic and overseas markets falls -29.2% and -6.2% respectively.
  • Pandemic-related supply shortages continue to bite as rising energy costs and inflation add to challenges.

The impact of global semiconductor shortages continues to stall engine production and, with rising energy costs and inflation, the outlook remains challenging. We need a clear strategy and long-term support to keep the UK internationally competitive, attract investment and ensure this critical sector can transition to an electrified future, futureproofing highly skilled jobs and livelihoods for the decades ahead.
